Snowskate: A Unique Winter Sports Experience

A Combination of Skate and Ski for Hard and Soft Snow

The Snowskate is a specially designed winter sports equipment that combines the thrill of skating with the versatility of skiing. Designed by Kari Thomsen, this innovative product allows users to enjoy the winter season on both hard and soft snow, without the need for specialized equipment.

The inspiration for the Snowskate came from older designs used in countries where ice is not as dominant, but there are still opportunities for winter sports. The unique technique used to clamp or bind the skate is only seen in the Faroe Islands, and its origins remain a mystery. Thomsen took this technique and incorporated it into the design of the Snowskate, creating a product that is both practical and fun to use.

What sets the Snowskate apart from other winter sports equipment is its simplicity and versatility. Unlike traditional skis or snowboards, the Snowskate can be used with regular winter boots, eliminating the need for specialized footwear. The skate is made of wood with a steel runner, providing stability and control on various types of snow. Its practical design makes it suitable for both children and adults, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the thrill of winter sports.

The Snowskate was first designed in 1999 and went into production with a focus on streamlining and quality. The materials used, such as mahogany and stainless steel, were carefully chosen to ensure durability and minimum maintenance. The skate is available in three sizes - small, medium, and large - to accommodate different boot sizes. The tying technique, showcased in four included photos, allows for a secure and snug fit to the boots.

Using the Snowskate is similar to ice skating, but it is primarily intended for use on hard snow and flat terrain. The skate's design and materials have been optimized for maneuverability and performance, making it a joy to use. The skate's wide steel runners provide excellent control on hard snow, while the tying technique ensures a secure fit to the boots.

The Snowskate project began in the summer of 1998, with extensive research and testing to determine the optimal dimensions and profiles for the skate. The production was carried out at a carpentry workshop, where stainless steel rails and laces were mounted. Two hundred pairs were produced and sold in sports and leisure stores, introducing a new concept for winter play and sports.

The Snowskate has received recognition for its innovative design and outstanding performance. In 2014, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Sporting Goods, Fitness, and Recreation Equipment Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.

Experience the thrill of winter sports like never before with the Snowskate. Its unique design and versatility make it a must-have for anyone looking to enjoy the winter season to the fullest.
